High School Percussion Classes Info and General Scheduling
Percussionists at Naaman Forest are enrolled in a combination of 3 courses and are as follows:
A1 - All Percussion: A percussion class for all students double-blocked in band. Band is intended to be a daily course and the 1st period class on A days offers students a more complete opportunity to prepare for upcoming performances and assignments.
B5 - Battery Class (Fall)/Non-Varsity Band (Spring): This class is for marching battery percussionists in the Fall and is scheduled 1st period on B days so that we can go outside to work on marching fundamentals and drill. In the Spring, this class will meet alongside our Non-Varsity, Symphonic Band.
B7 - Front Ensemble Class (Fall)/Wind Ensemble (Spring): This class is for non-marching members of the marching band in the fall and most classes will be taught by Mr. Mehrafshan. In the spring, this class is for our Varsity Percussionists in Wind Ensemble.
At this time, schedules are likely far from settled for most students. Also, band courses are technically titled “Instrumental Ensemble,” “Non-Varsity Band,” and “Honors Varsity Band.” The most important thing is to make sure you are scheduled for the correct periods as outlined above and that I am your teacher of record. We will all need to be patient for the first few weeks of the year as everything settles out. However, please keep an eye on your schedule and make sure you do your part to get into the correct sections of band.
After School Rehearsal Schedule
Stay on top of our schedule by following the Calendar section found at the top of this website. You can click HERE for our Google Calendar
Most weeks, we will have after school rehearsals on Monday (3:30-5:30), Wednesday (Stadium Rehearsal until 7pm) and Thursday (from 3:30-6:30)
During bad weather (rain and/or excessive heat), we will keep Wednesday rehearsals on campus and rehearse from 3:30-6:30
We will perform at all Naaman Forest Varsity Football Games, generally on Fridays.
Our first game will be Friday, August 29. Our week off is the week of September 12.
On game days, students will need to report to the band hall after school. We will have a brief rehearsal, pack our trailer, get dressed and eat dinner (provided by the boosters). Students should not plan to go home before the game on game days.
After School Rehearsals are a vital component to a successful ensemble. As a result, they are a part of our graded curriculum and mandatory. Please contact Mr. Collins as soon as possible if there are any concerns to this schedule.
Plan Ahead! Mandatory Upcoming Events
Our contest season is both the most rewarding part of marching band, and the busiest! We have mandatory contest performances starting on Saturday, September 20 and ending on Saturday, November 8. Most Saturdays have an event during this time, including during fall break. We know this is a major commitment and that is why we are communicating now so you can plan now. It is absolutely devastating when a student misses a contest.
September 13 - Drumline Clinic and Showcase from 9:30-1:30pm
September 20 - North Texas Drumline Contest (Forney HS)
September 27 - Wylie Marching Invitational
September 30 - Showdown at Standridge (during the school day)
October 4 - US Bands Crowley Regional
October 11 (Beginning of Fall Break) - Royse City Marching Contest
October 18 - Battle for the Spear
October 22 - UIL Region Adjudication (after school)
October 28 - US Bands Southwestern Championship (after school)
November 1 - UIL Area Contest
November 8 - Lewisville Drumline Invitational
Tips for a Successful Year
As someone who has spent 18 years either in high school or teaching high school, here are a few tips on how to have a successful year:
1) Meet expectations, even when you don’t feel like it.
2) Do things on time. If you don’t do it now, when will you?
3) Be involved and take pride in yourself and your school.
4) Be friendly to others, be brave socially, and always be yourself.
5) Find the joy in everything you do.
